Jimmy, Mo Mhíle Stór (Jimmy, A Thousand Times my Treasure) Irish Ballad at New York Irish Center
This is my own, new translation of a long beloved ballad, Jimmy Mo Mhíle Stór. 💔😌🎶 I’m so happy to be at a stage with my Irish that I feel like I can analyze other translations and attempt my own. As with translations of anything, some of the ones of this song fall short in my opinion, some generalize or convert beautiful Irish constructs into English. And as is most common with Irish songs, some translations try to make them more palatable and even RHYME in English, and all raw emotion and original meaning of the text is lost. So I tried to translate this faithfully and literally, while also of course funneling it a bit through my interpretation. For example, “mo mhíle stór” is a term of endearment that you might see translated simply as “my darling” or “my treasure” etc., but imagine calling someone what’s literally there: A thousand times my darling? My thousand treasures? That’s the size of the feeling, and quantifying it with a number is something so unique to Irish. I’m also obsessed with Irish words that have double meanings. ‘Rún’ can be a term of endearment like “mo rún = my love’ but is also the word for ‘secret’. The word “taitneamh” (TÆ-nyuv) is used for a variety of things in Irish like “enjoyment” or “pleasure”, but what taitneamh literally means is “shine”. So what you’re saying when you enjoy something is to say something SHINES for you. Which I think is just about as close as language ever gets to perfectly capturing something uncapturable. This is where we get the English expression “to take a shine to” someone or something. I think it’s beautiful to keep all the possible meanings in mind for this song. That this young gal will always shine for Jimmy, or that the memory of their time together shines for her still. One last thing: every translation says she’ll spend the REST of her life alone in the woods grieving him, but it looks to me like she’s just saying, “the next part of my life”. Maith an cailín.😌🤍🎶

Caoineadh na dTrí Mhuire (The Lament of the Three Marys) - An Irish Song for Easter Week
Переглядів 3,1 тис.3 місяці тому
Caoineadh na dTrí Mhuire (Lament of the Three Marys) is among the oldest (known, recorded) songs written in Irish. Though the original melody has been lost to time, this one has been around for quite a while and is known throughout the world! I think there is something of the ancient in it, as well as a timeless reverence and refreshingly raw humanity. There’s something really special about thi...

Stan-nós is back for Seachtain na Gaeilge, the festival of the Irish language from March 1 to 17 🐶☘️🎶 the tune is ‘S ambo éara, about a lass who doesn’t want to settle! Do sing with me, but learn it with caution! Once it gets in your head, it’ll never leave. In any case, stay tuned for the end when Stan flexes his teanga👅 in support of the teanga☘️ #irishmusic #seachtainnagaeilge #irishamerican...

Dónal Óg♥️ one of the most articulate melodies I’ve ever heard. Combined with the poem as lyrics, it’s almost too much to handle🥹✨ #irish #irishmusic #irishtradmusic #irishsinger #celticmusic #soprano #singersofinstagram #voice #ethereal #gaelic #outlander #trad #traditional #traditionalmusic #deccarecords #irishtraditionalmusic

Oileán Thenerife, An Spáinn, An Afraic. Bheadh an aithris seo aoibhinn álainn dá mbeadh na focail fuaimnithe i gceart inti, ach ní raibh, mo léan. Cén fáth nár éist tú leis an leagan a rinne Seosamh Ó hÉanaí, mar shampla, agus na focail a rá mar an gcéanna leis-sean? Le gach dea-ghuí, Páirín Phádraig Thomáis.
What a consummate master! Inspirational! Ashland Oregon
Time to redo it in a better sound quality.
💚🕊💫
Would love to be able to sing this but I'm not sure how to pronounce the words . So lovely ladies
Magnificent! Best version of this song that I have ever heard,
Such an amazing voice Madelyn 😮💚😊 beautifully done 🎉

Voce melodiosa per una lingua tra le più belle del mondo... Musicale e armonioosa...

Beautiful
So moving, very Irish traditional! Do the whole song, please.
Bellissimo.... La musicalità delle lingue celtiche è quasi inarrivabile...
Angelic, thank you
Finally the algorythm delivered something really enjoyable. Thank you for sharing this, so beautiful! I think last time I heard the second song it was sung by Iarla Ó Lionáird so very nice to add this new dimension.
Thanks so much for sharing this with us 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Great job
This is amazing!!! Thank you for sharing Madelyn!!! ❤
Thank you both 👍🏻
Great voice duo 😮😊

BEAUTIFUL JUST BEAUTIFUL
Got the same lines in book tusedays with morrie😊
Lovely
Brings me back to watching TV series Highlander.
You do know this song is joyful not painful and sad.
makes my DNA home sick
What's the tune?
Sirening is going up and down in scale. Vocal work.
Damn, Gurl. That was other-worldly, it is so beautifully done. Goosebumps!
Even though it's considered an Irish song, the lyrics were by Frederick Weatherly, who was English
Would a 10 hours version exist, I would listen to it twice in a row.
Despite the beautiful rendition this is 100% not the most iconic Irish song. We consider this American if considered at all.
🕊️🇮🇪✝️This album moves me so much.
Nice voice, but definitely not a Gael.
Wow, never heard a slow version! Amazing…
I would love to learn the complete lesson ^^ Your voice is so amazing!!! Thanks for sharing! :D <3
🇮🇪
Not even close to one of the saddest songs in English
sounds nice but too derivative of muireann nic amhlaoibh's version
It's hauntingly beautiful.
Alk i got was treasure of my heart.
Beautiful...sounds like it could only be written by somone who has lost a son or known that same loss
This is amazing.
